Meet Michael James Morris Of James Oliver Joinery..
Bespoke structural timber.
Tell us about you and James Oliver Joinery?
My name is Michael James Morris, and I run James Oliver Joinery as a sole trader, specialising in bespoke hardwood joinery. Having trained as a traditional bench joiner, I'm passionate about transforming premium hardwood into high-quality, functional pieces built to last.
The business is named after my two sons, James and Oliver. My goal is to build a lasting family business that one day they can be part of and continue into the future.
What made you decide to start your own business?
After years of learning my trade under an experienced craftsman, I decided it was time to take the leap and start my own business. It was a big step, but one I've never looked back on, and I'm proud to offer a personal, high-quality service to every customer.
Where does James Oliver Joinery come from?
The business is deeply personal to me. After losing my dad in 2014, I wanted to create something meaningful that reflected the values he passed on. Naming the business after my sons is my way of building a legacy and passing my skills and work ethic on to them in the future.
How do you work sustainably?
I source premium European hardwood directly from importers and buy only what each project requires to minimise waste. Every offcut is reused wherever possible, with even wood shavings being passed on to a local butcher for smoking meat. Nothing goes to waste if it can be put to good use.
What experience do you have in the industry?
I completed a seven-year apprenticeship with an excellent mentor, learning both traditional and modern woodworking techniques. Now in my fourth year of trading independently, I've completed over 100 staircase renovations and personally manage every project from consultation through to installation.
Working with both hand tools and machinery has given me the skills to create bespoke joinery, including staircases, windows, doors, mouldings and more, all crafted from high-quality timber.
What makes your staircases different from all the rest?
To me, a staircase should be a standout feature in a home, not just something functional. Every staircase is individually designed and handcrafted using solid European oak, rather than mass-produced engineered materials.
I oversee every stage of the process myself, ensuring exceptional quality, strength and attention to detail. The result is a staircase built to last, adding value and character to your home for years to come.
How long do they take to complete?
Most staircase projects take around eight working days from survey to completion. This includes manufacturing, installation and fitting, with bespoke glass typically requiring an additional 10-12 working days. Every project is completed personally to ensure the highest standard throughout.
What are your future plans for 2026?
I'm grateful for how far the business has come and plan to continue building on that success. My focus is on delivering more bespoke oak and glass staircase transformations while maintaining the quality and service my customers expect.
How much are your staircase renovations?
A standard staircase renovation typically starts from around £4,500, with bespoke designs priced according to the customer's requirements. Every quotation is fully itemised and tailored to suit individual budgets, offering premium craftsmanship at a competitive price.

Our Philosophy
Quarter-sawn timber selection.
We select each timber piece so the natural growth of the oak follows the sweep of the handrail. This structural alignment guarantees both physical integrity and visual continuity.
We work exclusively with the finest European hardwood, sourced directly from trusted importers, to produce staircases of exceptional quality. Every mortise and tenon joint is handcrafted for maximum strength, creating staircases designed to last for generations.

The Method
Precision of half a millimeter.
Our process unites historic British timber framing with modern structural engineering. We control every stage from timber selection to final installation.
Honouring the grain.
I do not hide the natural character of the oak. Instead, I align the timber's growth rings with the structural flow of the staircase, ensuring silent steps and flawless grain-matching.
Bespoke engineering.
Before a single chisel touches timber, every helical curve and structural connection is modeled to guarantee absolute stability. The result is a sculptural masterpiece built for generations.
